Benefits

Why the compact convertible HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 makes sense as a refurbished premium business laptop

Compact 13.3″ 2-in-1

The smallest of HP's premium 1000-series convertibles, alongside the 14″ HP EliteBook x360 1040. The 15.6″ HP EliteBook 1050 is a standard laptop. A roughly 1.25 kg aluminium body for people who want a transformable format in a smaller bag.

Genuine 8th Gen Kaby Lake-R

Quad-core Intel U-series processors from the 8th generation (i5/i7, some with vPro) with UHD 620 graphics. Enough for documents, spreadsheets, dozens of tabs and video calls.

CNC-milled aluminium chassis

The chassis is milled from a block of aluminium — a matte surface, a solid feel in the hand, and hinges that hold the screen steady at any angle. The series passes MIL-STD-810G testing.

360° hinges + pen support

The touchscreen flips into tablet or tent mode, and pen support lets you sign, mark up a PDF and take handwritten notes straight on the display.

HP Wolf Security platform

Hardware-hardened security that is rare outside the business class: HP Sure Start (BIOS protection), Sure Run, Sure Recover and Sure Click, plus TPM 2.0.

Dual Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

One of the two Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB-C) connects a monitor, network and power through a compatible powered dock over a single cable. Handy for people who use the laptop both at a desk and on the move.

56 Wh battery with HP Fast Charge

HP Fast Charge charges to about 50% in half an hour with the laptop off or in sleep mode and a suitable 65 W USB-C charger. Practical between two meetings in different offices, when there's no time for a full charge.

IR camera for Windows Hello (option)

On configurations that include it — an infrared camera that signs you in with a look.

HP Sure View 700 nits (option)

On select units — an integrated privacy panel that dims the screen against side viewing at the press of a button. Useful for sensitive data on a plane or in a cafe.

Sensible value as a refurbished laptop

As a used laptop that has been through a technical audit and refurbishment, the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 opens up the ultra-premium convertible class at a price a new equivalent rarely matches.

Product description

HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3: the compact 13.3-inch convertible flagship of the Kaby Lake-R wave

Premium convertible business laptops have never been a mass category. They are for people who need a real working machine that folds into a tablet when the moment calls for it. Among the few of its generation, the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is the compact, 13.3-inch one: 360-degree hinges, pen support and the full HP Wolf Security stack packed into a light aluminium body of around 1.25 kg. It's a machine for someone who wants the transformable format at the tier 4 level, but without the footprint of the 14-inch convertibles — a laptop that fits a smaller bag and still doesn't compromise on business security.

The very word “notebook” we use for such machines has a precise origin — October 1988. That month NEC unveiled the UltraLite: the first PC-compatible computer with the size and weight of a paper notebook, around two kilograms in an era of eight-kilogram “portables.” The American press needed a new word for the new breed and took it from the stationery shelf: notebook. The category the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 competes in today — thin machines for people on the move — bears a name coined in surprise at a Japanese machine four decades ago.

The EliteBook x360 line has an interesting origin: it is the business sibling of the consumer HP Spectre x360. HP took the thin, folding convertible silhouette of the Spectre and hardened it for corporate use, adding the hardware security, the IT manageability and the MIL-STD-810G durability that businesses expect from the Elite brand. The chassis is CNC-milled from a block of aluminium — a process that gives a matte surface, a dense feel in the hand, and hinges that keep the screen steady at any angle without wobble. On the G3 the bezels around the screen are noticeably thinner than on the previous generation, and on a convertible that has a practical effect: in tablet mode the machine is easier to hold one-handed because it's narrower and lighter. Even the Bang & Olufsen speakers are inherited from the Spectre family.

Underneath sits a genuine 8th-generation platform — Intel Kaby Lake-R with quad-core U-series processors and Intel UHD 620 graphics. For everyday business work — documents, spreadsheets, dozens of open tabs, video calls — that handles the load without lag. What's more interesting about this model is what the build allows. The 360-degree hinges and pen support mean that in a meeting you can flip the screen into tablet or tent mode and mark up a presentation with the pen, instead of passing the laptop hand to hand. An IR camera for Windows Hello (on the relevant configuration) signs you in with a glance; the 56 Wh battery with HP Fast Charge reaches about 50% charge in half an hour with the laptop off or asleep and a suitable 65 W USB-C charger while you grab a coffee between meetings; and one of the two Thunderbolt 3 ports connects a monitor, network and power over a single cable through a dock. On top of all that is the HP Wolf Security platform — Sure Start (BIOS protection and recovery), Sure Run, Sure Recover and Sure Click — rarely found outside the business class.

Honest about the trade-offs: the memory is LPDDR3, soldered to the board, capped at 16 GB — you choose it at purchase and it doesn't upgrade afterwards, so it's better to take a unit with 16 GB if you'll keep it for years. The camera is Full HD (1080p). If those are your priorities, the same family has logical alternatives: the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 is the 14-inch version with a larger screen and a 1080p IR camera, while the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4 is the direct successor — a Whiskey Lake generation with an all-CNC aluminium chassis and, again, a 1080p camera. From the other brand, the direct rival is the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 3 — an ultra-premium convertible with a magnesium chassis and the signature ThinkPad keyboard. But if compactness and weight lead your list, the 13.3-inch HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 stays the smaller choice. As a refurbished business laptop from ITR Bulgaria, the model opens up the ultra-premium convertible class at a far more sensible price than a new equivalent — having passed a technical audit, a cosmetic assessment and configuration, with a real warranty and support.

Who it suits

Scenarios where the compact convertible HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 makes the strongest sense

Managers who want compactness and touch

A director or manager who carries the laptop between meeting rooms and travels often values the 13.3-inch body at around 1.25 kg — it fits a smaller bag. And when there's something to show across the table, you flip the screen into tablet mode instead of turning the whole laptop around.

Presentations in tent mode

In a client meeting you fold the screen back and stand the machine in tent mode on the table — the slides face the other person, the keyboard is tucked away. It's more natural than nudging an open laptop between people.

Working with a pen

Pen support turns the screen into a place to sign, mark up a PDF or jot notes by hand during a conversation. For people who often revise documents or sketch out ideas, that saves printouts.

Premium mobile specialists

A consultant or field specialist who is out of the office three days a week wants a machine with business security and a weight they don't feel in the bag. 2× Thunderbolt 3 docking at the desk, Wolf Security for corporate policies and a compact body for the road — that's the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 profile.

Additional information

Where the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 fits in the series ▼

EliteBook x360 1000 is HP's ultra-premium convertible line — above the standard clamshell EliteBook 800 models (830 / 840 G5 / 850 G5) and alongside the ultralight HP Elite Dragonfly. This is the tier 4 segment, where HP commits to the transformable format, the thinnest chassis and the full set of business features.

Within the 1000 series there are three sizes: HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 (13.3″, the compact one), HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 (14″, a larger screen and a 1080p camera) and HP EliteBook 1050 G1 (15.6″, workstation character with optional discrete graphics). The HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is the compact convertible.

The G3 generation succeeds the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 (Kaby Lake) and is itself succeeded by the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4 (Whiskey Lake, an all-CNC aluminium chassis and a 1080p camera). The G3 introduced noticeably thinner bezels and a brighter 700-nit Sure View option compared with the G2.

The HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is not ideal if… ▼
  • You need to upgrade the RAM after purchase — the memory is LPDDR3, soldered, capped at 16 GB. Pick a unit with as much as you'll need. For a RAM slot, look at a standard business laptop with SO-DIMM.
  • You want a built-in camera above Full HD — the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is 1080p. The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 and HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4 mentioned here are also 1080p; for higher resolution, check another specific model.
  • You need discrete graphics for video editing, 3D or CAD — the model relies on integrated Intel UHD 620. For that kind of work, look at the HP EliteBook 1050 G1 or the ZBook series.
  • You want the latest wireless — the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 has Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2. For Wi-Fi 6, look at a newer generation.
  • You want a standard laptop without 360-degree hinges — if tablet mode and the pen aren't for you, the clamshell HP EliteBook 830 G5 / 840 G5 from the 800 series gives the same business security in a classic body, usually at a more sensible price.
  • You need a guaranteed specific configuration (IR camera, Sure View, 4G LTE, a particular display) — these are factory options and aren't present on every unit. Check the specific configuration.
Choosing the right size and form factor ▼

13.3-inch convertible (HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3): the compact 2-in-1. Suited to frequent travel, presentations in tablet mode and pen work with minimal bulk in the bag. Trade-off: less screen area than the 14-inch models.

14-inch convertible (HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5): more screen area and a 1080p IR camera, in a slightly larger body. For people who want the transformable format but with a bigger display and a better camera for video calls.

15.6-inch (HP EliteBook 1050 G1): workstation character with optional GTX 1050 graphics — a different scenario, for heavier graphics work rather than for lightness.

Standard laptop vs convertible: if you'll never use tablet mode or a pen, the clamshell HP EliteBook 830 G5 / 840 G5 gives the same business class without 360-degree hinges — usually more sensibly priced as a refurbished laptop. The x360 makes sense precisely for touch, pen and the 360-degree hinges.

Construction: a CNC-milled aluminium chassis, 15.8 mm thick, that has passed MIL-STD-810G durability testing.

Alternative models ▼

Within HP:

HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 — the 14-inch version from the same convertible line and generation. A larger screen and a 1080p IR camera. Trade-off: a larger, slightly heavier body. A logical pick if you want a bigger display and a better camera.

HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4 — the direct successor. A Whiskey Lake platform, an all-CNC aluminium chassis and a 1080p camera. A newer unit, usually at a higher refurbished price.

HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 — the previous generation (Kaby Lake). A more affordable option, but with thicker bezels and no 700-nit Sure View. Reasonable on a tight budget.

HP EliteBook 840 G5 G-series — if you don't need tablet mode: a standard 14″ business laptop with the same Wolf Security platform, often more sensibly priced and with better serviceability (a RAM slot on some configurations).

Cross-brand alternative (ultra-premium convertible, same generation):

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 3 — the direct rival from the Lenovo ThinkPad line. A magnesium chassis, an integrated pen and the signature Lenovo ThinkPad keyboard with TrackPoint. A different take on the same idea — an ultra-premium convertible for business.

Note: don't compare the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 with HP ProBook or entry models — they are from a different class and target group, without the convertible format and the full set of premium features.

Refurbished by ITR Bulgaria: what value do you get? ▼

The HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is a model where refurbishment has clear logic. Tier 4 ultra-premium convertibles are rarely bought new by small firms and individuals because of the price — the refurbished market is the way to reach this class at a sensible value. The CNC aluminium chassis ages well: the matte surface and milled construction don't loosen the way glued panels do.

When refurbished by ITR Bulgaria, the model goes through a technical audit and cosmetic assessment, cleaning and configuration for repeated business use, with original software. After that it comes with a real warranty and support. That turns a used laptop into a refurbished business laptop you can rely on for years.

Frequently asked questions ▼

Is the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 a good choice as a used laptop?

Yes, if you need a compact ultra-premium convertible. This is a tier 4 machine — 360-degree hinges, pen support, an aluminium chassis and HP Wolf Security — a class that costs a lot new. As a refurbished laptop it opens up that format at a sensible price, with a warranty from ITR Bulgaria.

Can the memory be upgraded?

No. The memory is LPDDR3, soldered to the board, capped at 16 GB — it's chosen at purchase. The SSD (M.2 NVMe), however, is replaceable. If you'll keep the machine for years, take a unit with 16 GB.

What's the difference between the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 and the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5?

The HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is the 13.3-inch, more compact model with a Full HD (1080p) camera. The HP EliteBook x360 1040 G5 is the 14-inch version — a larger screen and a 1080p IR camera, in a slightly larger body. Both are from the Kaby Lake-R generation on the same business platform.

What's the difference between the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 and the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G4?

The G4 is the direct successor: a Whiskey Lake platform, an all-CNC aluminium chassis and a 1080p camera, which the G3 also has. The G3 is usually more affordable as a refurbished laptop; the G4 brings the newer camera and platform.

Does it have pen support and a touchscreen?

Yes — the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3 is a convertible with a 13.3″ touchscreen, 360-degree hinges and pen support (HP Active Pen). It can be used as a laptop, as a tablet or in tent mode.

What configurations are out there for the HP EliteBook x360 1030 G3?

Intel Core i5 or i7 from the 8th generation (some with vPro), 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR3, an NVMe SSD up to 1–2 TB. On certain units: an IR camera for Windows Hello, an HP Sure View privacy panel (700 nits), a 4G LTE module, an FHD or UHD touchscreen. It's worth checking the specific unit.
